Neighborhood brief Town 'n' Country · Hillsborough County · 33615, 33634 · pop. approx. 80,000

80,000 neighbors. One State Senator. Less than one Spanish-speaking constituent-services staffer.

Town 'n' Country is the largest neighborhood in District 23. Tallahassee has treated it like the smallest.

Town 'n' Country is the largest single neighborhood in District 23 and one of the most diverse in Florida. 53% of residents are Latino. 38% speak primarily Spanish at home. The state-level constituent services available to those residents do not exist in their language at the speed a working family needs. Stormwater, schools, working-family wages, immigration document access, and Medicaid eligibility all require a state senator's office that shows up in 33615 in both English and Spanish.

Where Maya fights for Town 'n' Country

Three fights. All local. All actionable in the next session.

01

Bilingual constituent services, week one.

The District 23 office will be staffed in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole from day one. Walk-in hours in Town 'n' Country, not just downtown Tampa. Office hours that match the second-shift schedule of working families.

02

State-level wage-theft enforcement.

The same Attorney General's wage-theft unit that protects Ybor service workers is the unit that protects Town 'n' Country construction workers. 53% of Florida wage-theft complaints are filed by Spanish-speaking workers in this region. Funding follows the volume.

03

Sweetwater Creek stormwater overhaul.

The 2024 Sweetwater Creek flooding wiped out three blocks of Town 'n' Country residential infrastructure. State stormwater appropriation, with a Town 'n' Country line item, not a county allocation that gets redirected to South Tampa.

Local voices

Why Town 'n' Country residents are with this campaign.

My grandmother has been calling the state senator's office for two years to get help with her Medicaid eligibility. Nobody who speaks Spanish has called back. The status quo is not acceptable.

Maya has done legal-aid clinics here for five years. She is the only candidate I have seen on Hillsborough Avenue on a Tuesday morning when the rest of them only come for the cameras.
